Did You Know?
. . .both the Rabbi and Cantor have one day off a week. The Rabbi's day off is Tuesday and the Cantor's day off is Thursday!

. . .our Temple is one of only 12 congregations in the United States chosen for a STAR Grant. This is a grant of $35,000 for Outreach Programs. For more info, contact the Rabbi, but NOT on Tuesday!!

. . .you can dedicate a Torah Chapter for $180. This is a good way to honor someone or something for anything!!!! (Well, almost anything.)

. . .that we could use an additional $250,000 to complete our vision of Temple Avodat Sholom's Capital Campaign!!!

...beginning September 2004, Temple membership will be required for all families with children in Grade 2 (and above).

HONORARY BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Every year during the High Holy Days, we unveil the plaques in the Lobby which honor those members who have been very generous in their monetary support of the Temple during the prior fiscal year. This September we will unveil the lists for the 26th Board of Governors for fiscal year 2009-10.

All donations made between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 to Temple Avodat Shalom, excluding donations to the Rabbi’s and Cantor’s Discretionary Funds and the Capital Campaign Fund, will count towards the minimum of $500 to qualify for the 27th Honorary Board of Governors. Donations of $1,000 or more qualify for the Shalom Circle for 2010-11. One of the easiest ways to qualify for these designations is to make a Yom Kippur pledge in the fall.

WELCOME SHALOM BABY & GAN MISHPACHA!

Two new groups will be meeting once a month at Temple
Avodat Shalom beginning on Sunday, September 13. From 9:00-
10:15 am, Shalom Baby, a joint program of Temple Avodat
Shalom and Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey will
be an opportunity for families with children 2 years and
younger to come together to sing, play, hear stories, do
crafts, learn and get to know each other.

From 10:00-11:00 AM, Gan Mishpacha will be a chance for families

with 3-4 year olds to participate in similar activities. Both of
these programs are being run by Rabbi Paula Feldstein, UJA-
NNJ Shalom Baby Coordinator and teacher at Temple Avodat
Shalom. Rabbi Feldstein was a Jewish Preschool Director
and has "played" with this age group for many years. These
programs are free and open to the community. If you know
of anyone who might be interested, have them contact Rabbi
Feldstein at paulaf@ujannj.org or invite them to just come
and try it out!

Torah Restoration Project
Over the last few months, many of you have noticed that,
first our small Bar Bat Mitzvah Torah scroll, and now our
largest and original Torah scroll, which is itself a survivor of the
Holocaust, have been absent from the Ark. Each scroll has in
turn been given to a local Torah scribe, or sofer, named Jay
Greenspan who has been repairing and restoring our sacred
scrolls. The small Torah is back in its place; the letters which
needed to be re-inked and the seams which needed to be resewn
are complete. Mr. Greenspan is now beginning the same
work on our Holocaust Torah and will, over the next year,
check and repair each of our other three Torah scrolls.

The cost of the repair work on the Bar/Bat Mitzvah scroll
was paid for by Anita and Stuart Plotkin, who originally
donated the scroll to the Temple in 1991. Anna and Nicholas
Aleynick have made a generous contribution in honor of their
twin sons, Nathaniel and Daniel's Bar Mitzvah, toward the
repair of the Holocaust Torah, which will be substantial. We
will need to raise additional funds to complete the restoration of
this scroll and to continue with the repair of our other three
Torahs.

Everyone is invited to participate in the special Mitzvah of
restoring and writing a Torah by contributing to our special
Torah Restoration Fund. Contributions of $180 or more are
recognized by having a "chapter of Torah" dedicated in memory
of or in honor of a loved one or friend on our Torah dedication
scroll in the Temple Lobby.

VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!
Do you have 1-2 hours a month? Are you looking for a way
to burn excess calories? Looking for happiness? How about
a way to contribute to Temple Sholom without reaching into
your pocket? The newly formed Volunteer Committee is
looking for a few great men, women and children to help out in
a variety of ways throughout the Temple and all it will take is
an hour or two. By volunteering your time you will also help
the Temple save money and get more accomplished. It’s also
a great way to meet others in the Temple Sholom community.

Most of the areas we need help with will only take an hour or
two a month. As cited in the Wall Street Journal on March 21,
2008, a new study found that people who gave money or time
to a charity said they are happier than those who didn’t share.

Do you have an area of expertise that we can call upon?
How about a hobby that you would like to share that can benefit
others? Do you own a business that has excess supplies that the
Temple can use? Several congregants have stepped up over the
past year by helping with electrical work, construction
expertise, knitting chemo caps and donating toner for our
printers. This has saved us thousands of dollars in labor and
material costs, helping our bottom line and those in need! Now
it can be your turn.

Not sure how you can help, all you have to
do is email or call us and we can match you with the right
opportunity.

Be a part of the solution! Contact us at
volunteer@tsholom.net or Jonathan Rochlin

HOME REPAIRS
Are you a senior citizen in need of repairs on your home but
might not have the financial resources to otherwise attempt
such repairs. Bonim Builders may be able to help.
Bonim’s mission is to improve the quality of life for area
residents by helping to renovate, repair and refurbish homes for
those in need. Bonim volunteers have in the past year installed
windows, sheet rock, cabinetry and flooring; installed grab bars
for seniors; and have painted both interior and exteriors of
homes.

Bonim is also hoping to initiate a Home Weatherization
Day on Sunday, November 1 (Mitzvah Day) where our Bonim
volunteers will perform minor home repairs, yard work and
help winterize a senior’s home. Work could include weather
stripping and caulking as well as installing grab bars, hand rails
or non-skid mats for bathtubs and checking/installing smoke
detector.

If you could use such assistance, please get in touch with the
Temple Office. Bonim would like to identify and assess
seniors’ homes over the summer so that we can outreach to our
Bonim volunteers by early fall.

Temple Avodat Shalom Funeral Society

Temple Avodat Shalom’s Funeral Society, a "pre-need" funeral plan,

again opens its rolls to members who are under 45 years of age -

with comparable arrangements for those 46 - 60. For an annual fee,

the Funeral Society will be there at the time of your greatest loss,

the passing of a spouse )or yourself(, and eliminate the burden on

your children. Call the Temple Office, 201-489-2463, ext. 205, as

soon as possible, but certainly by October 10, if you are interested

or want more information.

The Temple has been deeded a double crypt in the Garden
of Memories, a non-denominational mausoleum. If you are
interested, contact the Office.

Sponsor An Oneg
Many congregants sponsor a Friday night Oneg Shabbat to
celebrate a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary
or to honor a friend or relative. But there are several Friday
nights this year that have no Oneg Shabbat sponsors. If there
are no sponsors, there can be no refreshments.
Sisterhood coordinates the sponsors, purchases the
refreshments and sets the tables. You don’t have to do anything
besides write the check. We’ve now made it easier than ever to
help. You can co-sponsor with another family or just offer to
help and we will match up sponsors. The costs are $200 to
sponsor a Full Oneg, $100 for ½ of the Oneg, or $50 for ¼ of
the Oneg.

Please choose one of the above and let us know by
contacting Lisa Cohen at oneg@tsholom.net or 201-647-
8650. Sisterhood will match up sponsorships and let you know
which Friday night you are sponsoring. (You don’t need to be
there, if you can’t make it.)

A Most Embarrassing Situation. .
The table is set, the lights are dimmed and a wonderful
fragrance is wafting from the kitchen. You have invited 8 very
important business associates (or your daughter's possible
future in-laws). You are looking forward to a very enjoyable
dinner and evening. The doorbell rings and standing there are
15 people! You are mortified because you do not have enough
food.

Can you imagine something like this? Well, it has happened
to us at Temple Sholom. We always ask people to let us know
if they plan to attend Temple functions, especially if a meal is
to be served. At a recent function there was not enough food for
everyone, though we had ordered more than enough for the
number of people who responded. We are very happy when
lots of people attend but we always want to make sure there is
enough food. The Temple can not afford to always buy lots of
additional food just in case more guests arrive. Please help us
by letting us know a few days in advance if you plan to
attend.

How's Your email?
Recently, the Temple Office has been sending weekly e-mails to remind Temple members of upcoming services, events and happenings. If you have NOT been receiving them, we don't have your e-mail address!!
To remedy the situation, e-mail the Office, tsholom@optonline.net and ask to be added to our listing.

SIDDUR SHALOM dedications
Anyone wishing to dedicate a copy of our new Shabbat prayer book in memory of or in honor of a loved one or friend can do so for a donation of $36.00.

Temple Avodat Sholom Kosher Policy
Temple Avodat Sholom has a "soft" kosher policy regarding food served at the Temple. This is a policy, that has been ratified by the Religious Activities Committee and the Rabbi and that follows the prevailing practices at most Reform congregations. It is intended to respect our members' personal beliefs and practices.

Please observe the following guidelines when preparing food in or bringing food to the Temple:

  • Do not bring or serve pork products, including bacon bits, prosciutto, or packaged products whose ingredients include pork or lard.
  • Do not bring or serve shellfish, including shrimp, crab, lobster, oyster sauce, mussels or their broths or derivatives.
  • Do not bring or serve fish without scales such as catfish or shark.
  • Do not mix milk and meat products. Therefore, at meat meals please do not use milk or cream for coffee, do not use grated cheese on salads or pasta, and do not serve dairy ice cream and/or milk chocolate.

Temple-Sponsored Events:

These include all school, sisterhood, brotherhood and fundraising events.

  • Onegs are dairy.
  • Other social events may include either dairy or meat meals.
  • If a class dinner or other event involves a meat meal, the food must come from a kosher source. Dairy products may not be served in the body of the meal. However, dairy products may be served at the Oneg following services or the program.

Helpful Hints:

  • It is not necessary to look for packaged products that are specifically labeled as kosher. However please avoid using packaged products, such as butter and cheese, that include milk ingredients when preparing a meat meal or vice versa.
  • Products that are parve are neither milk nor meat and may be served with either type of meal. Fish and eggs are parve.
  • Please note - poultry and poultry products such as chicken broth (as an ingredient) are considered meat.

If you have any questions when preparing for a food event, please call Rabbi Borovitz for clarification.

Please be SCENTS-able
A number of congregants have respiratory problems and have had adverse asthmatic reactions, in the Temple, in the presence of some perfumes, essences or even after-shave lotions.

We can't adopt a "scent-free" policy, but we request that the use of perfumes and similar products be kept to a minimum when you are in the sanctuary. Thank you.

Supermarket Gift Cards
The old Shop-Rite Supermarket Scrip has a new look. Instead of gift certificates, it now comes as gift cards. The Temple Office now has Shop-Rite gift cards in denominations of $50. You pay the Temple $50 and then use them at any Shop-Rite; Temple Sholom makes 5%, better than money in the bank, a CD or a lot of other investments, guaranteed. It is a fund raiser for Temple Sholom, but we need you to purchase them to make it work. Call the Office, 201-489-2463, for further information, or stop by during regular business hours to make your purchase.

Home Or Hospital Visitations
Are you a Temple member who is confined to your home due to illness or disability? Would you like a member of the Temple to come to visit, to chat, to read to you, etc? We would like to determine the need for such a mitzvah within our Congregation. If you think you might like to be a part of this outreach program, please contact the Temple Office, 201-489-2463, ext. 202, or administrator@tsholom.net.

Are you a Temple member who is confined to a hospital, or do you know a member who is? Would you like the Rabbi to visit? As a result of the Health Information Privacy Act (HIPA), hospitals no longer allow any clergy to view the patient list. Rabbi Borovitz wants to visit or contact any Temple member who is hospitalized. Please be sure to notify the Temple office if you know of a member who is hospitalized.
