Caring For Israel's Needy
At a Shabbat Service a few years ago, Amos Elad, one of the key leaders of MEIR PANIM, shared with us the story of this amazing place where the volunteers include both secular and religious Jews working together and the "guests" represent a cross section of Israeli society from recent immigrants to Sabras.
Poverty has made heavy inroads in Israel, with over 20% of the population subsisting below the poverty line. MEIR PANIM has a network of soup kitchens for the needy in many cities throughout Israel. MEIR PANIM provides needy elementary school children with nourishing lunches every day
For just $1 a day, you can provide a hungry child in Israel with a nutritious warm meal; for just $4 a day, you can provide a needy soul with a nutritious warm meal.
If you would like to make a contribution to MEIR PANIM, send your check made out to Temple Avodat Shalom and indicate it is for MEIR PANIM. Rabbi Borovitz will ensure that the donations reach MEIR PANIM.

The Starfish Board is also looking for a delegate to represent Temple Avodat Shalom. If you are interested, call Nilene Chase.

FOOD DONATIONS FOR FOOD BANK
In these difficult financial times, food banks are receiving
less donated food but are experiencing greater need . When you
do your grocery shopping, buy an extra item or two. Please
bring donations of food (non-perishable and in unbreakable
packaging) to the temple lobby whenever possible (yes, even
during the high holy days; hunger knows no holiday.)
Center For Food Action
As winter and Thanksgiving approach, the Center for Food Action (CFA) needs your help. For every day, they need peanut butter, hot & cold cereals, hearty soups, juice, canned vegetables, canned meats and tuna, instant mashed potatoes, rice and paper goods. For Thanksgiving, they need stuffing mix, canned sweet potatoes, canned green beans, canned fruit, cranberry sauce, muffin mix, canned pumpkin, coffee, tea and hot chocolate mix. Put items in the Temple food donation basket. Monetary donations & supermarket gift cards in $10, $15 & $20 amounts can be donated in the Temple Office.
The Sinai School
If you have furniture that is in very good or excellent condition, please consider donating the items to a new residential program for Jewish women with developmental disabilities. The Sinai School (formerly Sinai Special Needs Institute) recently acquired a beautiful colonial in Teaneck to serve as the residence. The agency will be starting with four young women who will receive practical life skills training (diet and exercise, shopping, money management, menu planning, meal preparation, vocational development). Sinai is currently looking for donations of high quality furniture (tax deductible receipts would be provided) and dedications. For more information about this wonderful program, please contact Moshe Coan, MSW, Director of Sinai's residential programs at 201-303-4303 or mcoan@sinaischool.org
VOLUNTEER / CARING COMMUNITY
Your Family needs you!!!
When you joined Temple Avodat Shalom, you joined an extended family. As in any family, you share the good times and the hard times. Simchas and tragedies. When your family is in crisis, you somehow find a way to lend a hand. Now, some of your fellow congregants, your extended family, need that hand.
The Caring Committee has been formed to help Temple Avodat Shalom members who are in crisis. When a situation arises, a member of the committee will determine the need and then call on volunteers from the database to help out.
So what can you do? Volunteer to add your name to the Temple Avodat Shalom Caring Committee volunteer database. Give one hour a month to help someone in our family.
Ways you can help:
Cook a meal
Order in a meal
Drive a child )where you live( to Hebrew School
Drive a Temple member )where you live( to Friday Night Services
