Sisterhood News As Rosh Hashanah approaches, we want to wish everyone a very healthy and happy New Year. Our first event for the year is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on September 12. Thank you to all the Sisters in the Hood who will be "racing" and to everyone who donated to our team. It’s not too late to make a donation. Copy and paste the link below to add your contribution. Together we can always make a difference! http://www.komennyc.org/site/TR/Race/race2010-Sistersinthehood November 8 is our Sisterhood Paid Up Membership Dinner. Expect delightful company, tasty food, and shopping! Several vendors will be selling products and our Gift Shop will be open. This is a terrific opportunity for you to get a head start on your Chanukah shopping! (We would greatly appreciate members paying their Sisterhood dues before the dinner). It’s a great evening out and no dishes to wash! We have many exciting events planned for this year. This spring we will host a Fashion Show / tricky tray. Watch this column for more planned events throughout the year. Sisterhood Membership: Please be sure you are a Sisterhood Member! Unless otherwise specified, your Temple dues payments are posted to other charges before Sisterhood dues. Therefore, on your temple bill, you need to indicate that $36 should be applied toward Sisterhood dues. Or, you may send a separate check for $36 made payable to "Temple Avodat Shalom Sisterhood." Sisterhood membership dues are waived the first year of Temple membership. Scholarships: Each year we welcome requests from the children of Sisterhood members for scholarships for travel to Israel or for a Jewish camp experience. One camp and one Israel scholarship per student are permitted. Remember, you must have paid your Sisterhood membership dues prior to December 1, 2010 – see above information on membership dues. To apply, the child must send a letter of request to the Sisterhood board telling us about the trip or camp and why he/she would find it meaningful. Requests must be made by April 15, 2011. Scholarships will be mailed to parents by 6/1. Sisterhood is always planning entertaining and interesting events. Please send us ideas. And let us know if you are interested in our various committees. Come see what we are all about. Or call us to find out what is happening. We welcome your suggestions and your company. Our next meetings are on September 13th & October 18th at 7:30 pm at the Temple. Everyone is welcome. HELP WANTED We are looking for volunteers to fill several positions:Oneg Help: Help shop and/or set up for Friday evening Onegs. Sisterhood Store: Do you like to shop? We need volunteers to help sell, set up the store and shop for new merchandise. Please contact us if you can help in any capacity. Co-Presidents
For the 6th consecutive year, a large group of Temple members and friends attended our annual Take Me Out to the Ballgame event. Once again, we saw the Jackals play at Yogi Berra Stadium, sandwiched between a tailgate party and an absolutely fantastic fireworks show. We are the largest Temple/Church group the Jackals get every year. Thank you all. Our next Card Night will be on September 13th, from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. We are always happy to see first-timers. If you’re hesitant about playing, drop in at any time just to schmooze. The Monday Night Football game will be on, and you’re welcome to come and hang out. Starting with October, the card nights will be held the first Monday of every month. For more information, contact Eric Goldfarb. On to more serious things (not that we don’t take baseball and cards seriously) …Brotherhood will once again be funding the School to School Program, linking our fifth and sixth graders with Israeli students of the same age. We are proud to donate money to this program, which has a strong impact on the Temple’s children. Brotherhood (and also Sisterhood ) members will once again be serving as ushers on the High Holy Days. We usually have quite a few volunteers, but we always like to add new people to our crew. Consider the benefits: you feel good helping the Temple at the start of the New Year, you get to wear a flower and look important, and you get on-the-job usher training. If you’re willing to help at one of the services, call the office, or e-mail Steve Berman at brotherhood@avodatshalom.net SAVE THE DATES: Here’s another opportunity to feel good about helping the temple. We’ll be putting up the Temple’s Sukkah on Sunday, September 19th, and taking it down 2 weeks later on October 3rd. Our recent turnouts have been awesome, but we still welcome first-timers. We’ll meet at 9:00 AM, have coffee and donuts, and then go outside to work – rain or shine! Monday, October 4th – Join us for the first Brotherhood BBQ in the Sukkah!! Watch your emails for details. Sunday, October 24th – The first Brotherhood breakfast of the year will feature both candidates, Dennis McNerney and Kathe Donovan, in the upcoming election for Bergen County Executive. The breakfast will start at 9:00 AM. Look for detailed announcements as we get closer to that date. There are many more events planned for this coming year. More breakfasts, including the fabulous Jewpardy; the Brotherhood Friday night Service; the Passover Wine Sale; a bowling night in conjunction with Sisterhood, and more. And in the spring, on Saturday, April 2nd, once again Brotherhood will present our fabulously funny and successful Comedy Night.….Watch for details on these and other events. If you’re thinking of participating in Brotherhood but are not sure how to get involved, have any questions or just want to be added to our email list, email us at brotherhood@avodatshalom.net In Brotherhood you’ll find a group of friendly men, who help make our temple a warm place. Looking forward to seeing you this year! L'Shanah Tova!
