Torah Restoration Project
Over the last few months, many of you have noticed that,
first our small Bar Bat Mitzvah Torah scroll, and now our
largest and original Torah scroll, which is itself a survivor of the
Holocaust, have been absent from the Ark. Each scroll has in
turn been given to a local Torah scribe, or sofer, named Jay
Greenspan who has been repairing and restoring our sacred
scrolls. The small Torah is back in its place; the letters which
needed to be re-inked and the seams which needed to be resewn
are complete. Mr. Greenspan is now beginning the same
work on our Holocaust Torah and will, over the next year,
check and repair each of our other three Torah scrolls.

The cost of the repair work on the Bar/Bat Mitzvah scroll
was paid for by Anita and Stuart Plotkin, who originally
donated the scroll to the Temple in 1991. Anna and Nicholas
Aleynick have made a generous contribution in honor of their
twin sons, Nathaniel and Daniel's Bar Mitzvah, toward the
repair of the Holocaust Torah, which will be substantial. We
will need to raise additional funds to complete the restoration of
this scroll and to continue with the repair of our other three
Torahs.

Everyone is invited to participate in the special Mitzvah of
restoring and writing a Torah by contributing to our special
Torah Restoration Fund. Contributions of $180 or more are
recognized by having a "chapter of Torah" dedicated in memory
of or in honor of a loved one or friend on our Torah dedication
scroll in the Temple Lobby.

Director Naomi Friedman and members of the Board of
Directors will be on hand to welcome families and provide
information about Religious School and other aspects of the
Temple’s religious, social and educational programs. Everyone
is welcome to tour the facilities and ask questions. Bagels and
coffee will be served.

Temple Avoda families with religious school students
should attend a special presentation starting at 10 am.

VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!
Do you have 1-2 hours a month? Are you looking for a way
to burn excess calories? Looking for happiness? How about
a way to contribute to Temple Sholom without reaching into
your pocket? The newly formed Volunteer Committee is
looking for a few great men, women and children to help out in
a variety of ways throughout the Temple and all it will take is
an hour or two. By volunteering your time you will also help
the Temple save money and get more accomplished. It’s also
a great way to meet others in the Temple Sholom community.

Most of the areas we need help with will only take an hour or
two a month. As cited in the Wall Street Journal on March 21,
2008, a new study found that people who gave money or time
to a charity said they are happier than those who didn’t share.

Do you have an area of expertise that we can call upon?
How about a hobby that you would like to share that can benefit
others? Do you own a business that has excess supplies that the
Temple can use? Several congregants have stepped up over the
past year by helping with electrical work, construction
expertise, knitting chemo caps and donating toner for our
printers. This has saved us thousands of dollars in labor and
material costs, helping our bottom line and those in need! Now
it can be your turn.

JFS "Parenting for Success" Helpline
Jewish Family Service announces the launching of the "Parenting for Success" Telephone Helpline. It began operation the week of December 9. The phone lines are open four hours weekly (Mondays 5 - 7 p.m. and Thursdays 1 - 3 p.m.).

The JFS Helpline Team, staffed by licensed clinical social workers, offers free and anonymous guidance, support, information, referrals, resources, and short-term counseling to parents with children of all ages. Callers have the opportunity to discuss any and all parenting-related issues.

Parents are able to access this service by calling Jewish Family Service at (201) 837-9090 and asking for the "Parenting for Success" Helpline.

Benevolent Association
Temple Sholom's Benevolent Association, a "pre-need" funeral plan, again opens its rolls to members who are under 45 years of age.  For an annual fee, the Benevolent Association will be there at the time of your greatest loss, the passing of a spouse, and eliminates the burden on your children.  Call the Temple Office, 201-489-2463, ext. 205, as soon as possible, but certainly by October 10, if you are interested or want more information.

The Benevolent Association also has cemetery plots available for sale to Temple members.

Sponsor An Oneg
Have a special event such as a birthday, anniversary, or baby naming that you want to commemorate?  Sponsor an Oneg after a Friday night Service.  We are in need of Temple members to sponsor an Oneg on one of the following Friday nights: December 1 (Family Service); December 22 & 29; January 5; January 12 (Family Service); January 26; February 2 (Family Service); February 16 & 23; March 9 (Family Service); April 6 (Passover); May 25 (Memorial Day weekend); June 15, 22 & 29.

A Most Embarrassing Situation. .
The table is set, the lights are dimmed and a wonderful
fragrance is wafting from the kitchen. You have invited 8 very
important business associates (or your daughter's possible
future in-laws). You are looking forward to a very enjoyable
dinner and evening. The doorbell rings and standing there are
15 people! You are mortified because you do not have enough
food.

Can you imagine something like this? Well, it has happened
to us at Temple Sholom. We always ask people to let us know
if they plan to attend Temple functions, especially if a meal is
to be served. At a recent function there was not enough food for
everyone, though we had ordered more than enough for the
number of people who responded. We are very happy when
lots of people attend but we always want to make sure there is
enough food. The Temple can not afford to always buy lots of
additional food just in case more guests arrive. Please help us
by letting us know a few days in advance if you plan to
attend.

How's Your email?
Recently, the Temple Office has been sending weekly e-mails to remind Temple members of upcoming services, events and happenings. If you have NOT been receiving them, we don't have your e-mail address!!
To remedy the situation, e-mail the Office, tsholom@optonline.net and ask to be added to our listing.

SIDDUR SHALOM dedications
Anyone wishing to dedicate a copy of our new Shabbat prayer book in memory of or in honor of a loved one or friend can do so for a donation of $36.00.

Temple Sholom Kosher Policy
Temple Sholom has a "soft" kosher policy regarding food served at the Temple. This is a policy, that has been ratified by the Religious Activities Committee and the Rabbi and that follows the prevailing practices at most Reform congregations. It is intended to respect our members' personal beliefs and practices.

Please observe the following guidelines when preparing food in or bringing food to the Temple:

• Do not bring or serve pork products, including bacon bits, prosciutto, or packaged products whose ingredients include pork or lard.
• Do not bring or serve shellfish, including shrimp, crab, lobster, oyster sauce, mussels or their broths or derivatives.
• Do not bring or serve fish without scales such as catfish or shark.
• Do not mix milk and meat products. Therefore, at meat meals please do not use milk or cream for coffee, do not use grated cheese on salads or pasta, and do not serve dairy ice cream and/or milk chocolate.

• These include all school, sisterhood, brotherhood and fundraising events.
• Onegs are dairy.
• Other social events may include either dairy or meat meals.
• If a class dinner or other event involves a meat meal, the food must come from a kosher source. Dairy products may not be served in the body of the meal. However, dairy products may be served at the Oneg following services or the program.

Helpful Hints:

• It is not necessary to look for packaged products that are specifically labeled as kosher. However please avoid using packaged products, such as butter and cheese, that include milk ingredients when preparing a meat meal or vice versa.
• Products that are parve are neither milk nor meat and may be served with either type of meal. Fish and eggs are parve.
• Please note - poultry and poultry products such as chicken broth (as an ingredient) are considered meat.
